The Spanish Main | The Gospel According to Leekley
What if the notorious Leekley Bible had gone ahead and we got an American reimagining of Doctor Who? Well, it might have sounded like this...
From the imaginary liner notes:
From episode 1x03, “The Pirates.” A complete genre shift from the previous two sci-fi heavy episodes into a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas! An absolute blast to score, and I wanted to balance the more traditional piratical sounds (triplet time, a bit of Dorian colouring on the harmony, etc.) with the sounds of Spanish music. Ultimately the latter boiled down to using a flamenco-style nylon guitar for colouring.

A good song to cover next would be Sutekh's organ theme from Pyramids of Mars.
That would have been the smart thing to do in hindsight, especially right before Empire of Death dropped. I might give it a shot sometime

I'll be honest, everything about the song is excellent - _excellent,_ except the lead synth. It's really messy and the super zany tone isn’t really anything TD has ever done. If you're still on UA-cam, I'd like to know if you have the midi files. I'd love to make a personal version with a different lead.
Thanks, and I see what you mean in hindsight. I was aiming for the more complex digital leads from their early to mid 80s stuff, and overshot and ended up in Keff McCulloch territory I guess. I don't have any midi files for this one I'm afraid, but the original project file might be on an old hard drive somewhere

I would like you to recreate some NuWho music in Keff's style, like "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" for example.
It's actually a bit too upbeat and not ear hurtingly klangy enough for a Keff. But it's quite jolly.
I'm surprised you think so! It's tricky, because tempo wise Westminster Bridge isn't too far from something like "Burton's Escape" from Delta and the Bannermen. And the chord progression is similar to another cue from that episode too. Maybe I need to work on the instrumentation or mixing to really get the Klang factor
@GeorgeCMusic I admit it has been a while since I heard any Keff composition. I'm relying more on my reaction to watching the episodes originally, which at the time, was like having someone tape frying pans on your head and hit them with a hammer. Your music didn't make me want to hide:)
@@Mikey_Clarkie I'll take that as a compliment! I'll be honest, I've always had a weird relationship with Keff's music. Got the 25th anniversary CD at an impressionable age, and I'd say that some of his compositions in isolation actually work quite well. I wonder if he was badly served by the audio mixing that also made Mark Ayres scores so prominent in their respective stories
